  8. Reserve Officers Training Corps high school in Honolulu.]

  11.     The planes carried huge round sun figures on them and had
  12. red balls on their wings. I put on the radio and discovered we
  13. were being attacked by Japan. No one knew what to do. We were
  14. students and didn't realize the gravity of what we were seeing.
  15. We saw a huge billow of smoke rising from Pearl Harbor and later
  16. found out that it was the Arizona. It burned for hours.

  18.     That afternoon, the students were sent to search the
  19. mountains for Japanese paratroopers.
  20.  
  21.     Our mission was to detect and hold the Japanese soldiers
  22. at bay. Being so young, we were really frightened to be
  23. standing guard all alone, all night long, on a dark, lonely
  24. hillside. I spent a lot of time thinking about who could be out
  25. there in the night. I was so scared that I often heard and saw
  26. things that weren't there.
